When a Hand Became a Finger

I read about Varun Gandhi's alleged communal remarks (well, they haven't been conclusively proven yet) during an election rally and after watching this video the other day, I thought it was time to blog. Well quite a hot (or controversial, if you want) topic for one's first blog-post ever.

So, the story is something like this. Varun Gandhi said something like this in HINDI that
Agar koi kisi Hindu pe haath uthaayega, to woh uska haath kaat dega
which roughly means in English
"If anyone attacks a Hindu, he will attack him back (or cut his hand)"
But, the media houses in India, who are well-versed in Hindi and English both, translated this to
"If anyone raises a finger towards a Hindu, he will cut their hand."
There is a sea-difference b/w both the versions. I simply cannot accept that there was no person in the media who didn't notice this discrepancy. Now if you are wondering as to why the media did it, believe you me, the feeling is mutual.

This conscious effort on the part of the media to sensationalize the news-item, uncannily reminds me of a late-night crime investigator program on one of the news channel, where the catch-line of the anchor was
Agar chaiin se sona hai to jaag jaayiye
which means
If you want to sleep peacefully than WAKE UP ....!!!!

  1. Even though i do not agree with the media trying to sensationalize each and every issue to improve their ratings, i think the hue and cry in this case was more due to Varun Gandhi's intent to use religion and hatred as an election issue rather than the exact wordings of his speech.

  2. Its not how things are projected, the issue is the intent. The speech was delivered in creating a polarizing environment, in which Hindu votes would be consolidated. The Politics is simple, BJP doesn't have any muslim vote to lose bcoz they don't have any support from that community, so why don't they consolidate their Hindu vote bank using these speeches.
Everyone is communal, be it BJP, congress, left. Everyone want Power so that they can fill in their pockets.
Media anyway always put in some masala to sell its advertisement time. Varun's speech in actually would have affected only a thousand minds in Pilibhit, but the way in which issue was shown after 2 weeks of actual delivery affected the length and breadth of the nation, rather it waves reaching out to the Underworld , which sent its own sharpshooters to murder Varun the day he was to be arrested.

  3. Keep up the good work..

any such remark by the leaders of the country is truly and honestly unacceptable in every sense. This is undoubtedly spreading hatred in the name of religion. Leaders lead the entire country and not a section in the form of Hindu community.. so his statement is condemnable and he should understand the responsibility and sense of being a leader

  4. Are you trying to justify Varun Gandhi's actions?. There is no way a hate speech is acceptable, where people are ignorant and would just do watever you tell them to. Hasn't our country seen already so much violence and killings in the name of religion to see more fuel being added to the fire? No matter what the interpretation be, I simply hate Varun Gandhi and for that matter BJP. Congress may not be far, but still is better than BJP, who openly bank on using Hinduism to garner votes!

  5. If Varun made any statement against the EC code of conduct, then he would have to reply to the EC, and the last i remember, EC has acted against him. The intent was not to justify Varun here, but to bring to notice the glaring (and dare I say deliberate) oversight of the media. If you see the video I talked about, it starts with the deliberate-mistranslated statement and proclaims Varun as a villain. Now, either interpretation of the statement does *not* warrant this.
Now, w.r.t your last statement, I don't agree with that. But, just for the sake of argument ,if, according to you, BJP "bank" on Hinduism for votes, whats wrong with that. Its much much better than turning a blind-eye to illegal-conversions and just appeasing any group (be it a religious group or terrorist-families in Kashmir), which the Congress so often does and always "bank" on.
